The First Amendment Coalition (FAC) seeks an experienced communications professional to raise awareness about the organization’s mission to advance and protect press freedoms, free expression and government transparency. The communications director/manager will set communications strategy and priorities, and execute daily tasks to elevate FAC programs and inform news coverage of open-government and First Amendment issues.


Nonpartisan and nonprofit, FAC believes that the broadest range of engaged and informed communities is essential to the health of our democracy – that the values expressed by the First Amendment provide a blueprint for an inclusive, equitable society and a responsive, accountable government. To that end, FAC educates, advocates and litigates to protect and promote government transparency and First Amendment protections for all.


This is a hands-on role that requires the ability to think strategically, work collaboratively and execute independently. You will report to the Executive Director and work collaboratively with staff leadership to advance FAC’s mission. Like all of FAC’s employees, the communications director will be expected to perform some support functions for the day-to-day operations, such as maintaining internal records and contributing to quarterly or other reports.


For candidates with some experience, this will be a Communications Manager position with the ability to advance to a director position; candidates with more extensive experience may qualify for the position of Communications Director.


Core Responsibilities:


  • Overseeing and implementing communications strategies to advance FAC’s mission;
  • Overseeing framing and message development for organization and specific projects and outreach campaigns;
  • Writing, editing and designing mass email campaigns, press advisories, news releases, op-eds, blog posts and other web content;
  • Managing FAC’s social media channels;
  • Developing strategies to measure and grow audience and increase influence;
  • Using analytics to inform our tactics and understand reach and impact;
  • Developing marketing materials and providing support for live and recorded educational events;
  • In partnership with senior staff, planning, leading, and implementing content-driven proactive projects (experimentation is welcome! See Protest & Pushback);
  • Overseeing website improvements, including potentially a rebuild;
  • Hiring and managing consultants and vendors as needed.

Qualifications:


  • B.A. degree in communications, journalism, public policy or a related field;
  • At least five years of experience in strategic communications, marketing, or journalism, with at least one year of experience at a nonprofit, political or advocacy organization;
  • An understanding of the crucial importance of government transparency and First Amendment protections;
  • Demonstrated experience in conceptualizing, planning, and implementing communication strategies and campaigns;
  • Demonstrated experience leading audience development and email newsletters and leading industry tools (Mailchimp);
  • Excellent writing and editing skills;
  • Experience with media relations;
  • Experience using social media platforms for public advocacy, marketing or journalistic pursuits;
  • Basic knowledge of website user experience and best practices, with ability to manage technical experts/vendors/contractors;
  • Basic graphic design or multimedia production/editing.

We welcome candidates who will work remotely but require this position to be based in California. Candidates who want to work from the San Francisco Bay Area will have access to FAC offices in San Rafael (Marin County).

Location: 


FAC has offices in San Rafael, California, but this position can be based anywhere in California. 


Salary: 


$80,000-$100,000 depending on experience. Higher compensation may be available for someone with advanced skills and/or experience. Includes health benefits and eligibility for FAC’s 401(k) retirement plan, including a 5% employer match.


Starting date: 


Fall 2022.
